Computing the Determinant Through the Looking Glass
Keywords:
determinants, matrices, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dodgson, Primary Source Projects, linear algebraAbstract
This Primary Source Project (PSP) is based on excerpts from Charles Lutwidge Dodgson’s Elementary Treatise on Determinants with the Applications to Simultaneous Linear Equations and Algebraical Geometry (1867). Through a series of questions and examples, the project uses a historical lens to explore traditional techniques for computing determinants. It then introduces Dodgson and his work as a tutor in Oxford to provide a context for his specific technique for computing a determinant. Once students are exposed to his method, they generally prefer it to the one that is traditionally taught.
This PSP is suitable for use in any linear algebra class or a discrete mathematics class where students are exploring determinants. Beyond a level of mathematical experience consistent with the completion of Calculus I, this project does not assume any background.
